mommy skillz

Today I had Addison sitting on the counter while the pharmacist was describing the
procedure of giving the antibiotic to him using a dropper.
As the pharmacist demonstrated the amount I needed to give him,
Addison whipped my hair over my eyes back and forward with his small hands like wind shield wipers and then as I pulled the hair back off of my face, he proceeded to say my name 7 times in a row. "Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom. MOM! MOM!"
"Addie, shhh!"
As I looked up, the pharmacist was giving me "the teacher" look.
You know the one.
The one when you have been caught not paying attention to the lecture.
So she said firmly while holding out the dropper to me,
"Maam, I am going to need you to show me the amount of medicine you need to give your son, so that I know you heard me correctly."
"Fill it up to the 10 ml line twice and then to the l.5 ml line once,"
I rattled off, batting his small hands away from my face.
"Oh. Very good," she said, seeming surprised that I was, in fact, listening.
Clearly, she didn't know that I am used to deciphering the intermingled converstations of three boys talking at once, while doing dishes, starting dinner and chatting with my sisters on speaker phone.
Never underestimate the cognitive abilities of a harried mother.
We may look tired and scattered but we're always tracking.
We've got eyes in the backs of our heads, remember?

"like a windshield wiper" ha!

I just today admitted to my 9 yo son, who was silently pointing to something behind me, that I teased him when he was little, but I really don't have eyes in the back of my head.

I never thought I would admit that to him. :-)

Way to go with your Supergirl Self!

I am laughing my head off right now. I am picturing the whole scene in my head and reliving it all over again for you! Ha! You give the best word pictures. And just for the record - can I just come and smack that doctor for giving you the teacher look? Seriously.

Hi! I just started checking your blog out. My pastor went to college with you and I now go there as well. I also just started reading your "Jeans" book. And I love it!!! Thank you for your practical, female inspiration and wonderful words that inspire thought and make me laugh. Today's post about your children and the doctors just totally made me smile. I have 2 little sisters, and 3 nieces all under the age of 10 and it just brought a great smile to my face knowing what my stepmom and sister in law do every day with their kids!! =)

Great post! I don't think I could have repeated it back to the pharmacist...I think I have adult ADHD..."who is this kid anyways, and why am I getting him medication?"
