Santa, whoever and wherever you are,
thank you for blessing the socks off of our 3 little boys.
Thought you might like to see their response
when they opened your gift!
Merry Christmas!

a christmas list
I have a list I am trying to complete before we
head out to Colorado.
1. Organize the basket on top of the fridge.
2. Paint the kitchen chairs.
3. Finish two more chapters in the upcoming book.
4. Clean the house.
Let me give you a run down of where we are with the list.
Nowhere. Nada. Zilch. Zippo. Not one thing done.
It's more like semi-controlled pandemonium here.
But instead of pulling all my hair out, I am going to breathe deep.
And settle myself with the fact
that I am keeping the tradition of what Christmas was like that first night.
I bet Mary had a list.
1. Clean the donkey
2. Gather food for the journey
3. Make reservations with an inn in Bethlehem
4. Don't forget the swaddling clothes
5. Bring extra blankets - just in case
And then there was the reality of the night.
Chaos.
A packed city brimming with people.
An aching back and belly trying to adjust to the donkey's unwieldy gate.
A frantic search for a place to rest.
The mess of the stable.
Birth pains growing strong and steady.
And there in the midst of the cacophony of a middle eastern barn,
the hope of the world was born.
Small. Perfect. With reddened skin and peach fuzz for hair.
Drawing a deep breath and with a newborn squall,
heralding the arrival of God come to Earth.
Coming in the wildest of times,
to a struggling nation and an unstable world,
to bring peace on earth and goodwill toward men.
He came with a list engraved on his heart.
His purpose was woven into his DNA.
1. Seek and save the lost
And all these long Christmases since that first chaotic night,
he is still doing that.
One soul at a time. Coming into our mess.
Beckoning us with his love. Enfolding us in his grace.
Righting our crookedness with his truth.
And on this Christmas Eve, 2000 years later,
I am thankful that Emmanuel, God with is, is still working on his list.

christmas in modesto
Today Scott and the boys and I drove to Modesto.
Modesto is the town that my mom grew up in and
where the Blakeley clan resides.
And as we turned off of highway 205 onto 99,
the anticipation began to build in me.
And it brought a million memories flooding back.
They all run together, one year melding with the next.
But the turn off to Kiernan road meant one thing...Christmas was about to arrive.
It seemed like it took 7 hours to get there (2, in actuality.)
The joy began as we turned down Carver Road.
Lined by peach and almond orchards, the trees were bare limbed,
reaching up into the Christmas sky.
Dad would begin honking the horn as we passed Uncle Carl and Aunt Joanna's house.
More honking ensued as we passed Uncle Phil and Aunt Lana's.
Still more as we passed Uncle John and Aunt Neva's
and pulled into Grandma and Grandpa Blakeley's driveway.
The door would open and we hurried inside for hugs with
one question on our lips,
"Where are the cousins?"
We cousins were 20 strong.
Once the Inmans arrived we were complete.
As soon as the cousins were located, the fun began.
The house was filled with the sound of the aunts and uncles laughter.
Sometimes we would try and listen in...
especially if they were telling stories.
There were presents and food and sometimes a new baby to inspect.
On Christmas morning there were stockings and toys
and Grandpa's scrambled eggs for breakfast .
There was Christmas service complete with new Christmas dresses.
Then we would all pile into the church bus to go caroling.
Uncle John would try to pick up speed when we would go over bumps,
sending us thumping up and down in our seats.
I never knew who we were singing for but we always sang full voice.
Aunt Neva hit the high notes.
Grandpa could be counted on to fill in the bass.
I always stayed up late talking and laughing with my cousin Beth.
We would take pictures of each other,
modeling our new clothes that we had just gotten.
There was always a lot of lip gloss involved.
I think one year I wore a beret...I'm not sure where that came from
but that was some high couture photography.
It always seemed like something good was right around the corner.
More chocolate. More playing. More laughing.
Now I know that there is no such thing as perfect.
But in my minds eyes, those sweet long years ago,
surrounded by family and almond trees,
it seems to me like we got pretty close.

shameless plugging of my books and a hearty thank you
In case you were worried, it's not too late to get
My Bangs Look Good and Other Lies Myself:
The Tired Supergirl's Search for Truth
for your mom or your sister or your bff or your
friend at work that you have been telling about Jesus for Christmas.
But if you do, don't forget to show them this picture.
It is a firm reminder that cutting your own bangs is not a good option...
even if you get to write a book about it later.
And if they have already read that one...don't forget
All I Need is Jesus and a Good Pair of Jeans: The Tired Supergirl's Search for Grace.
We all need to be reminded about how much grace God has for us...
especially this time of year when we may need a new pair of jeans after
all the holiday eating.
And for those of you visit this blog, who leave lots of comments,
who have purchased the book and then re-purchased them
to give to family and friends,
you should know that I am extremely thankful for you.
Thank you for being a part of this writing journey
and for your kind e-mails and words of encouragement.
I am grateful beyond words for you and you bless me daily!
May you have a truly peaceful Christmas and
remember how much Jesus truly loves you.
No matter what your bangs look like.

people play sports at my house now
So Jack has started playing basketball.
Which means that I have become a mini-van mom,
cruising the streets of Redwood City to practices and games.
Up until this time I have escaped sporting events with my boys.
They just weren't interested.
But I think this season is a harbinger of things to come.
I have 3 boys...you can do the math.
And I have decided that if I am going to be driving in my van every
afternoon for hours on end that it needs to smell better.
I currently have 4 air fresheners in the van.
It is not enough. Sometimes I just hold one in my hand while I drive.
This is a time of adjustment for me and my van.
I didn't realize that once I started driving to activities that I would
spend more time with the van than I do with my husband.
I am also going to have to become accustomed to being a sideline mom.
The last basketball experiences I can pull from came from taking stats
for my college basketball team. (Stat girls...you know who you are.)
And I did a lot of yelling on the team's behalf.
I got involved. I said things like,
"Come on, you guys!" and "You can do it!"
But I am going to have to pull back when it comes to cheering for Jack.
It makes him skittish like a young colt.
He is experiencing "new legs" sports-wise and the screeching of his name
from the bleachers does not seem to encourage him.
During the first game his friend the ball passed to him
and I knew he didn't see it coming.
I yelled his name, "JACK!"
which caused him to lose focus and get hit with the ball in the head.
I'm sure his coach was thrilled.
After the game Jack said,
"Mom, don't yell my name. It was like High School Musical.
When the girl yelled at Troy. It was embarrassing."
God forbid that I remind Jack of High School Musical.
(W-I-L-D! Wildcats!)
I have also decided when the team is doing poorly that I need to
refrain from yelling out, "Jesus, help them!"
Even though I am really hoping that he will.
I got a few weird looks from some fellow moms when I called out to
the Lord during a full court press.
So its a new season...basketball and otherwise.
So I'm learning to keep my cheering generic and my prayers in my heart.
Live and learn, tsgs. Live and learn.

i'm pretty rich just in case you were wondering
It is winter here in Redwood City
(if we can call it winter with temperatures of 50 degrees).
But it is cold enough to crank up the heater at night and as a result
Addison has broken out in his worst case of winter eczema ever.
Bless his heart.
This led to a trip to see his allergist.
Who promptly reminded me
that I have yet to buy an epi-pen for his cashew allergy.
(An epi-pin is a syringe-like gadget that administers
epinephrine in case of a person goes into anaphylactic shock
due to a severe allergic reaction)
So after getting recommendations for lotions and moisturizing techniques
and watching a riveting video on how to administer the epi-pen,
Addie and I went to pharmacy to pick it up.
When the pharmacist asked for my payment of $150 I almost...
almost.... had a heart attack and needed to use the epi-pen on myself.
I called Scott from the car and broke the news.
He also was in shock....good thing the epi-pen comes in a two pack.
One for him and one for me.
Needless to say epinephrine was not in the Christmas budget.
I told my friend, Paula,
"I think I just bought the boys an epi-pen for Christmas.
I hope they like it and that it is all they ever dreamed of having."
I can tend to get caught up in the negatives...
like what if the boys feel like an epi-pen wasn't exactly
what they had in mind when they asked
Santa for a playstation 3 and Lego starwars sets?
I know by talking to friends that we are not the only family experiencing
the tightening of the economic belt this Christmas.
And while there are a lot of folks who have more than us
there are millions that have less.
So that being said,
I am making a conscious decision to dwell on all we have,
and the richness of this life we've been given despite how
many presents are stacked under the tree.
We have far more to be thankful for than to complain about.
We have more than enough food to eat
and more than enough cookies to share.
Even now we are feasting
on a new peppermint chocolate cookie recipe that I found.
Hello, lovely dollops of Christmas goodness!
We are all healthy with not a flu bug in sight.
(I may be making the children wear surgical masks so that this stays true.)
We have a warm house and blankets to cuddle under.
We have a lot of things to laugh about.
Just the other night, Will did an impromptu dance
that brought tears of joy to my eye. The kid has some sweet moves.
We are rich beyond measure with friends and family.
The stack of Christmas cards bringing photos and well wishes continues to grow.
(I'm not going to lie...
I'm a sucker for a good Christmas photo and newsletter.)
In a few short weeks, we will wing our way across the sky
to Colorado to be with brothers and sisters and parents and cousins and
the anticipation is already building.
The advent calendar countdown is fully operational with excitement
mounting each day. I was informed this morning,
"Just 12 more days, Mom! 12!"
Last night at church,
Scott reminded us that God chose to tell the good news
first to the commoners of the day, the shepherds,
reminding us that he is bringing peace and favor
to ordinary people just like us.
He called to mind that we have hope in Jesus and
a knowledge of mercy and forgiveness that
offers light and life in this holiday season.
Last night as I was tucking them in
(and threatened to close their doors if they came out again)
three little boys told me they loved me.
Clearly, I have riches beyond measure and nothing can change that.
Not even an epi-pen.

on the third day of christmas tosha zwanziger gave to me....
A brand new Pages CD.
One of my favorite things about Christmas is the music...
I am partial to Harry Connick Jr. and James Taylor come Christmas season.
But this Christmas season, I have been listening to a new album.
Pages by Tosha Zwanziger,
from the Father's House in Vacaville, California.
And while her songs may not be Christmas season songs,
the message of her album encapsulates the heart of Christmas.
My friend, Denise, sent me a copy to listen to.
Tosha (I love her voice...reminds a little of my favorite, Sara Groves)
has dedicated all the proceeds of this album
to benefit ministries dealing with human trafficking.
This issue is close to my own heart
as I have been talking about Project Rescuewhen I go and speak to women's groups.
The whole reason for Jesus coming all those long years ago was for our
freedom, spiritual, emotional and physical.
The thought that so many women and children today are in captivity even
now as I type, it mind shattering and heart breaking...
and is all the more reason to give thanks that the God who loves and made
us is still working in us, his people, to make wrongs right and show
the great and good love that he has for us.
So Tosha has graciously given 3 CDs to be given away
here on the blog.
So take a listen and put your name in the comments.
Earn an extra entry by posting a link to the blog on FB or tweeting about it and
mention that in the comments, too.
Winner announced Tuesday, December 7.
But even better, go download a song or 10 from Amazon or I Tunes or
her site and help be a part of making human trafficking go away.
Because its Christmas and I'm thinking that's a pretty great way
to celebrate Jesus birthday!

Because its Christmas and I'm thinking that's a pretty great way
to celebrate Jesus birthday!

on the second day of christmas bizzie lizzie gave to me....
A really super cute zippered make-up bag!
Isn't it so bright and cheery?
Perfect for your morning make up bag or to slip in a bff's stocking!
Charlotte, from Bizzie Lizzie, always comes through for us tsgs.
Two years ago,
right before All I Need Is Jesus and A Good Pair of Jeans came out,
I found Charlotte on etsy.
I placed a custom order with her
(giving her short notice even...sorry, Charlotte!)
and she made jean coin purses for my sisters and
2 sisters-in-law.
On Christmas Day, I gave my sisters their signed copy of the book
that was dedicated to them (the most fantastic tired supergirls I know)
and the coin purse as a little momento of the occasion.
One of my all time favorite gift givings ever!
So I have a soft spot for Bizzie Lizzie Bags designs.
You will, too, when you go check out her site.
Come back here and put your favorite bag in the comments
for a chance to win the zippered bag.
Link to the giveaway on FB or tweet about it for a second entry.
Winner posted Monday, December 6.
It really is a holly jolly Christmas!
