touching the clouds

Lately, I have had the pleasure of reading some really fun fiction.
Touching the Clouds, by Bonnie Leon, is one of those books.
I enjoy a good historical fiction novel. I really do.
This book follows the life of Kate Evans, an adventurous young pilot,
who bucks the "normal" life of a woman in the U.S. circa 1935.
In the midst of a country-wide depression, she is compelled to leave behind a childhood love and a safe offer of marriage to follow her heart's desire:
becoming a bush pilot in Alaska.
Does this not sound like an interesting book? It really is.
As we follow Kate's journey, leaving the safety of family and home and
flying into the wilds of Alaska, you can't help rooting for her.
Despite the sexism in the flying industry and the harsh reality of living on
the frozen tundra, you can't help being excited for her as she faces down her
fears, makes new friends, and proves herself against the challenges that come her way.
And of course, there is a cute guy involved...or two.
Because who would not be drawn to an adventurous, lovely girl like Kate?
There are some tense moments in the book when Kate flying skills are tested to the limit and her ability to survive in such a harsh environment is put to the test,
but our girl Kate pulls through.
This is a perfect summer read.
You can pretend, even when you are sweltering in the summer heat, that you are caught up on a cool breeze, flying above the icy glaciers with an even cooler Kate Evans.
