birthdays...giveaways....and rocky road

This past weekend was spent celebrating Scott's 40th birthday.
Which really neither of us can believe has happened.
I told him just yesterday,"You don't look a day over 35."
To which he responded, "And you don't look a day over 32."
I am very quick to remind him that I am not 40 but you should
should know that as I was perusing Target yesterday I saw a shiatsu massage seat
that you strap to a household chair for $99.99 and I thought to myself,
"Now that would be a truly luxurious Christmas gift." And I was serious.
So while I am not yet 40, my body thinks it is 73.
Next I will be asking for tubs of mentholatum and fiber supplements.
But back to Scott's birthday, we took it back to the old school, people.
Back to the day when Scott used to have a rap ministry and wear parachute pants.
Because we believe there's no party like an old school party.
We think we got the perfect picture for our Christmas card.

Scott got to re-live the good old days with his college roomies and friends.

There is nothing better than spending time with people you love and wearing bling.
Through out the weekends festivities, I couldn't help checking up on the giveaway comments. Because I am addicted.
And more than anything, I have enjoyed the fact that the item that has
received the most comments is the Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe-Joes
with candy cane sprinkles. I told Scott last night after reveiwing the comments,
"These are my people."
(COMMENTS FOR ALL 10 GIVEAWAYS WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL DECEMBER 1ST.)
And since you love chocolate like I love chocolate, I felt sure you would want
to hear of the Thanksgiving tradition that I best love. (How is that for a segue?)
My mom would always make Rocky Road candy on Thanksgiving day.
And as we were waiting for the turkey to be done and for the many sides to be put
together, us kids would eat the Rocky Road. BEFORE DINNER.
I believe therein lies the magic of the Rocky Road tradition.
You were expected to eat it BEFORE DINNER. And I see nothing wrong with this.
So in case you would like to whip up a little before dinner candy
Here is the low down.

Rocky Road
2 bags of chocolate chips (either milk or semi-sweet - your preference)
1 bag mini marshmallows
chopped walnuts or chopped pecans

Melt chocolate in double boiler. Spread 1/2 melted chocolate in 9x13 pan.
Sprinkle half bag of marshmallows. Sprinkle nuts - however many or little
looks good to you. Cover with remaining melted chocolate. Refrigerate until hard.
Use a table knife to chop into chunks. Eat to your heart's content.
My brother-in-law Kevin, says I am no longer allowed to show up to Thanksgiving
without the Rocky Road. I have roped them into my Rocky Road madness.
I will be signing off for the Thanksgiving festivities.
May your next days be full of family, food and perhaps some pre-dinner candy.
See you back here in a few days to announce the Thanksgiving giveaway winners!

10th day of thanksgiving giveaway: rene's christmas novels

On the 10th day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
Rene's Christmas novels,

shiny minty lip gloss,
lovely fancy soaps,
Bizzie Lizzie's zip bag,
chocolate covered Joe Joe's,
cute Bonbon charms,
a very sparkly reindeer,
a very snuggly sleep sack,
Everyday Grace note cards,
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.
I met Rene Gutteridge at my first writer's conference.
She was 7 months pregnant with her son, John, and she looked so adorable
I had to tell her. And she said after that, I was her new best friend.
Her first novel, Ghost Writer, came out that year.
My first book will come out in 2009....9 years later.
(No one ever said getting published was a walk in the park.)
But Rene is a gifted, talented writer with 14 books to her name and an
even better friend.
And she is giving away 2 of her books to end this giveaway with a bang,
all in the spirit of Christmas.
Boo Humbug - the last in her Boo series.

And The Ultimate Gift,
the novelization of the motion picture that came out last year.

You will thoroughly enjoy yourself, snuggling under a throw, sipping some tea
and losing yourself in these books.
Go over to Rene's website choose a book that looks interesting to you and
come back here and put it in the comments.
It's getting good, tsgs, it really is.

Now if you have been reading here for very long, you surely know that I have
some strong affections for lip gloss.
And this is probably my favorite so I must offer it again this year.
Because I love it so.

Bigelow Chemists Ultra Mentha Lip Shine. Hello, lovely minty gloss.
And besides lotioning up your dry winter lips,
it actually freshens your breath. And you just can't go wrong with that.
Put your favorite lip product (petroleum jelly and mentholatum are acceptable)
in the comments. Very soon you may be getting your shine on.

8th day of thanksgiving giveaway: lovely fancy soaps

On the 8th day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
lovely fancy soaps,

Bizzie Lizzie's zip bag,
chocolate covered Joe Joe's,
cute Bonbon charms,
a very sparkly reindeer,

When I happened upon these soaps on Etsy,
I actually could not believe they were soaps. Because they were so fancy.
Margaret of Amethyst Soaps makes her handmade soap from glycerin.
Now I used to make glycerin soap back in the day.
And they looked a lot more like blocks of colored ice.
But like I said, Margaret is fancy.
Amethyst Soaps is giving away a 4 oz Amethyst Soap and a 4 oz Turquoise soap.

Go check out Amethyst Soaps and come back and leave your favorite in the comments.
I'll start. Tumbled Turquoise. I have it here at my house right now.
And it's fancy.

by how she engages her patrons.
Charlotte and I could talk for days.

6th day of thanksgiving giveaway: chocolate covered joe joe's

On the 6th day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
chocolate covered Joe Joe's,

cute Bonbon charms,
a very sparkly reindeer,
a very snuggly sleep sack,
Everyday Grace note cards,
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.
So I went into Trader Joe's because it is one of my most favorite places to be.
And lo and behold, there were Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe's with Candy Cane sprinkles on the top.

And I began to sweat a little. All of that chocolatey minty goodness in one box.
I filled the rest of my cart but really could no longer focus.
Because of the Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe's with
Candy Cane sprinkles on the top.
And as I pulled my cart up to the register, the cashier looked at the Joe Joe's and looked at me and I looked at her and she said,
"Oh, no you didn't." And I said,"Yes...yes, I did."
And she said,"What are you doing to me? I've never seen these before."
And I said, "What am I doing to you? What is Trader Joe's doing to me?
They are taking me down. I am going down!"
Because who could resist a Joe Joe like that.
Then her friend came and started bagging and the cashier said,
"Have you seen these? Go get us a box. We are going to try one."
And I, emboldened by the thought of all that pepperminty chocolatey goodness said,
"What about me? I brought them up here."
And my best friend in the world Trader Joe's cashier said,
"Oh yes, you will have one. We are going to share them with the customers."
So I looked in the lady in line behind me and said, "You picked the right line!"
And right there in the midst of groceries, that lovely cashier started handing
out Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe's with Candy Cane sprinkles on the top.
And it was if the Christmas heavens opened up and reigned down joy and loveliness
and God blessed us everyone. I heart that Trader Joe's cashier. I really do.
And I just can't keep all that Christmas love to myself.
So put your favorite Christmas cookie in the comments, people.
And then when you try these....you will change your mind.
Because your new favorite Christmas cookie will be Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe's with Candy Cane sprinkles on the top.

Comments close December 1. Winners will be announced December 2.

5th day of thanksgiving giveaway: cute bonbon charms

On the 5th day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
cute Bonbon charms,

a very sparkly reindeer,
a very snuggly sleep sack,
Everyday Grace note cards,
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.
I can not say enough nice things about this next giveaway participant....
because she is my sister. And one of my most favorite people.
Erica began making charms when she, Jenny (my other sister and most favorite person) and I, set up mini-shop at a Christmas fair 3 years ago.
Her charms were the star of the show. We thought maybe we were cut out for retail but we had a whole lot of our other merchandise that was not the star of the show, that we had to take home with us.
So Erica kept making charms and Jenny and I went back to our day jobs.
And people, they just keep getting cuter and cuter.
I currently wear two of them...2 of her silver geometrique charms...
one has my initial "s" like this one

and the other is a mother's heart charm

except it has the names of my three boys on it. And I love them.
Erica's newest addition to her line is her Sugar Drop charm. Cute and sparkly.

She is offering the winner of today's giveaway one of her Christmas Sugar Drops.
Your pick.
So go to the Bonbon Charms Christmas page,
pick your favorite Sugar Drop,
(or any other favorite charm because the page will suck you right in, yes, it will)
and come back and leave it in the comments.

AND...Erica is giving a special tired supergirl discount code...
because she is awesome like that.
At checkout put "TSG" in the little box marked discount
and you will receive 20% of your order
.

This code is good until DECEMBER 1 so get your orders in quick.
Comments will be closed as of December 1. Winner announced on December 2.

4th day of thanksgiving giveaway: a very sparkly reindeer

On the 4th day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
a very sparkly reindeer,

a very snuggly sleep sack,
Everyday Grace note cards,
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.
This last summer when I went with my mom and sisters on our east coast
antiquing trip, I purchased this made by Sherri's Designs.

A very sparkly silver trophy with a very sparkly green canary on top.
When my friend, Angie, came over to my house this summer she saw it perched
on shelf over my writing desk.
She said, "Why do you have a sparkly trophy with a bird on it?"
And I said, "Because I love it."
Sometimes there are things that speak to us because of their beauty or their
form or their sheer sparkliness.
I found Allyson of Cele Home online and she sells a lot of very sparkly happy
things by Sherri's Designs and other fun home and holiday items as well.
Allyson named her business after her great-grandma Cele to inspire people and
remind them how important people are in their lives.
Each of the giveaways this week are being given away by women who have amazing gifts and talents and are willing to share that creativity with us tsgs and make our Christmas shine even brighter.
I love that.
Allyson from Cele Home is giving away a hand glittered flying reindeer on
a lovely velvet ribbon to trim your tree.

They use German glass glitter for all their creations. IT..IS..SO..SPARKLY.
Check out Celehome Christmas page (or any other page for that matter)
and come back here and tell me your favorite sparkly item in the comments.

Me first. EVERYTHING.
But especially the teeny tiny sparkly trophy ornament.
I think it's related to my bird trophy.
Comments closed December 1st. Winner picked December 2nd.

jimmy and jerry gourd live at my house

On Saturday, we went and helped with the Thanksgiving outreach at City Impact.
City Impact hosts four outreaches during the holiday season, passing out thousands of meals and bags of groceries in the Tenderloin in San Francisco.
My friend, Marie France, principal of the City Acadamey they have started in the tenderloin, gave my son, Will, some gourds and markers to play with.
This is how you know you have let your children watch Veggie Tales
one too many times.
Enough said.

3rd day of thanksgiving giveaway: a very snuggly sleep sack

On the 3rd day of Thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and aquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
a very snuggly sleep sack,

Everyday Grace note cards,
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.
My friend, Paula, is multi-talented.
She cooks. She sews. She raises 2 children. All the while partnering with
her husband, Glen, in their student ministry on Stanford campus.
Paula is one of those friends that brings by chocolate when the days
are long and hard and prays for me.
And there is just no way to top that in a friendship.
When I had Addison, who weighed in at 9 lbs. 12 oz, 5 days early.
She whipped me up a Mei-Tai. (Not a stiff drink though that may have been helpful...)
But a really neat asian style baby carrier that supports babies and toddlers
weighing up to 50 lbs. I could actually carry Addie in without hunching over
like Quasi Moto trying to support his weight.
My large headed children always grew out of their baby bjorns by 3 months.
Paula also makes really snuggly sleep sacks out of fleece.

These keep your baby safe and snuggled up without you ever having to worry
about their blanket falling off of them in the dead of night
or being flung up over their face,
thoughts of which can send an anxious mother into hysteria.
(Maybe that was only me who would wake up every 3.7 minutes to check and see
that my kids were still breathing.)
Paula is giving away a really fun california dreamin' style sleep sack.
So even if your baby is in Minnesota or your niece or nephew is tucked
away in a cottage in Northern Maine...they will be feeling california cozy
as they slumber the night away, toasty warm and worry free.

Check out Paula's mai tei desgin and come back here to the comments
and tell me your favorite fabric pick ...I'm going with puppies and hydrants...
maybe it's because I have boys.

tsg-thanksgiving-button-for-your-blog drawing

Did any of you know that there are people, very talented people,
who make those cute little buttons that go on people's blogs
that announce things like "best blog ever" or "cutie patootie giveaway"?
Well there are.
And since I am new to technology...I'm down with phones and that is about it...
I didn't know how to make a cute button for this giveaway
but I found Hilary at Simply Yours Designs and she made one for me, lickety split,
because she is fancy like that.
So all that to say you can also add it to your sidebar if you want to let
your readers know about the tsg thanksgiving giveaway.
Let me know if you put the button on your blog or website or just decide
to paste it to your forehead and wear it to work and you'll be eligible for the
MINTY DUO DRAWING -
A box of the Candy Cane Joe-Joe's and a tube of Bigelow's Mentha Lip Shine.

(Sorry, no picture of the Joe Joe's, God's gift of peppermint cookies to womankind.)
What, you say? A ten day giveaway and a drawing? That is too much!
Yes. Yes, it is. We don't do things small here at tired supergirl.
We like to go at least medium. Sometimes even slightly larger than medium.
(And when I say we...I really mean me...hence, the mediumness....)
Grab the code from my sidebar to your left
and leave your name in the comments if you post the button.

ps don't forget to sign up for the Sara and Everyday Grace giveaways
pss I am hoping that despite the craziness of life, the never ending laundry and the downward spiral of the economy that you know that God has his hand upon you...and that is even better than a giveaway...just thought that needed to be said.

2nd day of thanksgiving giveaway: everyday grace notecards

On the second day of Thanksgiving
tired supergirl's friends and acquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me -
Everyday Grace notecards
and Sara Groves new Christmas CD.

I am not sure if you have been to Etsy but it was on Etsy,
a place that one finds all things handmade, vintage and lovely,
that I found Everyday Grace: Specialty Cards and Such by Andrea Martin and the sparkly Christmas notecards with polka dots on them.
Andrea of Everyday Grace is a designer of all things beautiful.
I pretty much wanted to purchase EVERY SINGLE THING on her site.
But the sweet Lord helped me hold back since
the children need food every now and then.
Andrea loves to create anything and everything with paper and the love
of her craft shows in each minute detail.
She loves the idea of making things by hand and sending them
to people she doesn't know.
And she has some lovely treats for us, yes, she does, tsgs.
a adorable personalized box

to hold your beautiful pink and paisley gift cards

along with a luggage tag for your trip to the snow this Christmas

joined by a bag of confetti to celebrate your trip to the snow

and giftwrap in case, as the winner of this giveaway, you would like to send it to your mom or your best friend or your hair dresser since she gave you those fantastic highlights, instead of keeping all this goodness to yourself.

And if you would like to order some of Everyday Grace's specialty cards,
all tired supergirls will get 10% off of their order if they mention "supergirl"
at checkout.

1st day of thanksgiving giveaway: sara groves new christmas cd

Let's all sing together....
On the first day of thanksgiving tired supergirl's friends and acquaintances who donated lovely items gave to me - Sara Groves new christmas cd.
Today is the first official tired supergirl 10 days of Thanksgiving giveaway.
I thought about doing a 12 days of Christmas giveaway.
But I'm pretty sure that has been done before.
And what a better way to be thankful for the bounty that has been lavished upon me,
than to give away some things.
And I only have 10 items to give away so the #12 was not working for me.
So there you have it.
The first time I heard about Sara Groves was when my brother, Chris,
called me and told me one of his friends from college had put out an album,
Past the Wishing, and I needed to hear it. So I listened to it.
And I felt like Sara was singing all the prayers of my heart.
We got her to come sing at our little church in Burlingame and hung out
with her and her husband, Troy. They are keepers. Yes, they are.
3 things I like about Sara...
1. She writes and plays her own songs - that's sheer talent as far as I'm concerned
2. She sings about truth and Jesus and things that mean something - fantastic
3. She's funny - and you know how I feel about funny
Be prepared to thoroughly enjoy listening to her Christmas album and maybe to cry
a little. I'm not promising tears but sometimes she gets me, you know?
And I tend to be emotional at Christmas time anyway.
So I'm going in to listening to this with tissue on hand.

If you can't wait that long to buy it (because some of us like to get our Christmas tunes on early)you can buy it here.
And if you by chance are the winner and already have your own Sara Groves O Holy Night Christmas CD, you have the perfect gift for your best friend, Rita.
And if you don't win, maybe you should get one for Rita anyway. She deserves it.
She is your best friend after all.
The comments will be open until 8:00 pm on December 1st so tell all of your friends.
The winner of O Holy Night will be announced on December 2.
Make sure to leave your favorite Sara song or Christmas carol in the comments.

a little pre-christmas chat

I decided to drop the
"we-are-not-doing-a-BIG-christmas-this-year" bomb on the way home from school.
You have to prep children for these things months out.
We've never had extravagant Christmases
but this Christmas may be what my sister-in-law, Cheri, calls "slim pickins".
I explained that this year people have a little less money so we would get
to be really creative and think up fun, inexpensive things to give each other.
I thought the boys took the news well.
I enjoyed the blank stares that greeted me in the rearview mirror.
But my stomach gave a little lurch when Will called out peppily from the back,
"Don't worry, Mom, Santa always brings us lots of presents."
"Huh?" That was my response. I always forget about the Santa factor.
"Mom, Santa always brings us lots of presents.
Then Jack piped up,"Hasn't Mrs. Brien told you about Santa Clause?"
Which elicted a warning glance from me,"Jack Aughtmon!"
Because two years ago, Jack had come home from kindergarten
saying that his teacher said Santa Clause was dead.
Which I think was probably revealed in the telling of the story of the real Saint Nicholas,
but no matter, the Santa veil had been torn from his eyes.
He was in the know.
"Oh, Mrs. Brien will tell you about Santa," Jack said to Will, with a nod.
"I already know about Santa, Jack!" countered Will.
Will was unconcerned about parental lack of funds. Santa has him covered.
The conversation turned south as the boys threatened to buy each other
Barbie dolls for Christmas as all loving brothers like to do.
But I'm looking forward to the Christmas season.
I know we will be having some fun no matter what.
There's nothing wrong with doing Christmas on the cheap.
Sometimes it seems like that's when the memories get good.
I still remember my favorite christmas present as a little girl.
A fat stick of strawberry bonne bell lip gloss attached to a cord that hung around my neck.
I was all of 5. How I loved that sassy lip gloss.
I believe that was the very origin of my love of lip gloss.
I wore it with my velvetine Christmas dress like a priceless neclace.
So I am not worried about my boys and their slim pickins Christmas.
Between the dollar bins at Target and Santa, they are totally covered.

the memory is going

I'm writing this now because I may not remember I have a blog tomorrow.
The other day I was telling a friend about how I can't seem to remember
things any more. I gave her several examples of missed appointments,
forgotten special events and small things like finding out if hot lunch
was being served at school...before I sent the boys off to school.
Don't worry - the children were very excited by the happy meals their father
rushed over to them at lunch time.
She said that sounded like her. She is a senior citizen. This does not bode well.
Today I forgot about a birthday party I had rsvp'd to 2 weeks ago.
And was reminded by evite YESTERDAY that is was today at 3:30.
24 hours later...it was not a blip on my radar. I'm not sure I have radar anymore.
I was on the way to the store this afternoon
and thought I would call my friend Paula.
I missed her. So I left her a message saying maybe we could get together.
She returned my call leaving a very kind message saying,
yes, it would be good to see each other.
Maybe we could chat when we saw each other at her son's birthday party...
THIS AFTERNOON. Thank God for kind friends who don't hold our memories against us.
Then my sister, Jenny, called me and asked what we should do for dinner tonight.
And I was thinking in my head, "I don't know what you are doing for dinner but
I will be having chicken curry."
Until it occurred to me that Jenny and Brett were coming over
and that's why she was asking.
This occurred to me exactly when Jenny said,"We'll be there between 6:30 and 7:00."
Which I should have remembered since we planned it YESTERDAY.
It was at this point in my day that I started to consider that there is a strong
possibility that I've got some mild dementia going on.
All Sue's lights are on but nobody's home.
So if by chance you are my friend and I have known you for 20 years
and when I see you, I look at you with a blank stare...don't judge me.
Pray for me and pass me some ginkobiloba.
Hopefully, the old Sue will be back soon.

get thee behind me snickers

I could just stop with the title on this one.
Three words. Boy's. Halloween. Candy.
Three more words. I. Can't. Resist.
No one knows the perils of halloween candy better than I.
I don't purchase candy that I like for Halloween's trick or treaters.
I know myself better than that. I never buy chocolate to hand out.
I buy tootsie rolls and dots and tootsie pops.
They could be in the house with me for years and I would never touch them.
But you can never really protect yourself from the candy that your own children bring home. You really can't.
Because it sits in plastic pumpkins on top of the fridge
mocking you with its chocolatey tiny loveliness .
"Look up here! Look up here!" call out the little snickers.
"One little fun size candy bar won't hurt!" shout the mini reeses cups.
I'm going to be honest...in my emotionally fragile state in the presence of so
much chocolate...I believe I ate 5 mini snickers yesterday.
I say 5. It could have been 7. I'm not sure. I was awash in a chocolate haze.
Thankfully, there are no more snickers in the house. Because I ate them all.
I think I'm safe for now. I'm just going to pretend that yesterday never happened.
Even though I do believe my thighs now touch in the middle
due to my high snickers intake in the past 24 hours.
Thank God Halloween only comes once a year.
But keep the prayers coming, tsgs...Candy Cane Jo-Jo's just arrived at Trader Joe's.
There is no rest for the chocolate challenged.

smelly times ahead

When I signed up for being a mom,
I didn't realize I was signing up for certain smells.
Everyone knows that there will be dirty diapers when you have a baby.
That is a given. And maybe some spitting up if you have a reflux baby on your hands.
Everyone knows that babies cannot take care of their own smells
so you have to take care of their smells for them.
But I did not really count on this still being a problem, say, 7 years in.
But if I am honest, I need to say the smells have multiplied exponentially.
Maybe this is because I am a female in an otherwise male household.
Just yesterday, I was leaning up against one of our bean bag cubes watching tv.
Addie came and sat next to me. Scott had just put him in his pajamas.
I asked Scott, "Did you change him?" He said, "Yes, he was dry."
"No poo?" "No poo." "Addie, do you have poo?" "No."
"Are you sure, because you smell stinky."
"Sue, he doesn't have poo. I just changed him."
"Okay, I'm sure you are right but I am catching a whiff of something very poo like."
At this I put my nose near the hindquarters of Addie's footie pajamas.
Because the other thing you sign up for being a mom, is putting your nose in places
that you would rather not put your nose. Like a mommy hound dog.
It is your job to track down the smells that your children
(and possibly your husband) leave behind.
Half eaten apples rotting under the seat in the car. Sippy cups wedged under the bed with traces of fermenting milk. Your basic everyday smells of unwashed hands, sweaty t-shirts, unbrushed teeth, stinky lunch boxes with discarded bread crusts and smelly socks which have been secreted away in the deep recesses of the couch.
All of these smells you must ferret out with your heightened sense of mommy smell
so that you can right the wrong smells that are taking place in the house.
I have taken to purchasing smelly candles in inordinate amounts.
This is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
This is not for ambience. It is for survival.
I have also thought about buying stock in Febreze.
Because sometimes everything needs to be sprayed down. Febreze is a delay tactic.
You use it until you can locate what is causing the stench and can deal with it.
Just this Sunday, I opened up the van and thought,
"Heavenly daystars, something has surely died in here."
I'm wondering if the dampness of the fall weather is resurrecting that dead cow smell from this past summers' milk debacle.
I immediately got out the febreeze and sprayed down the entire interior.
I let a bit of it settle on the children as well. Just for good measure.
Than I sprayed the living room. Because for some reason it also smelled funky.
And we just can't have funky. I prefer the nice scent of citrus or vanilla.
After I put Addison in bed, who, by the way, was not stinky,
I came back to resume my position in front of the tv.
And wouldn't you know it the poo smell remained? So I began searching.
And I found it. On the bean bag I was leaning up against.
A brown smudge that smelled unmistakably like poo.
Do not ask any questions about this brown smudge.
Because I have no answers for you. How does poo get on a bean bag?
That is entirely another blog altogether.
And do we really want to know this answer? No, we do not.
After that, I decided to sit elsewhere.
And to buy more stock in febreze. And possibly, some stain remover.
And some more smelly candles. Because I have this gut feeling,
what with the teen years just five years out,
the smell situation is not going to get much better anytime soon.

remembering

I mostly process things with words.
The exciting things. The happy things. The hard things in life come out
in a jumble of words on paper or in a flow of characters across the computer screen.
It has been this way since jr. high.
Since Nick, the pitcher on my brother's baseball team, seemed so unattainable.
I recorded in my purple padded journal (with great joy) the first time he accepted a wad of big league chew bubblegum that I passed to him through the chain link fence.
And then there was that one time (5 gagillion) when I felt lonely in high school,
all of that flowed into sad angst ridden poems and word pictures in my
three ring binder. I tried to make sure my sorrow rhymed. It was better that way.
Tonight I am trying to process the 2 services that I attended this weekend.
The memorial services of two people who left their imprint on my life.
Claudine was family. She was my cousin Jessica's mother-in-law and my cousin
Alys's aunt. Even though we didn't share blood, we shared people.
And when you share people, you are family.
That is what she told me when she and her sister, Glynnis, agreed to do
the flowers for my wedding. She said to me, "Of course we will, you are family."
I remember telling them I had no idea what flowers I wanted but I wanted
them to be different colors because the bridesmaids dresses were off white.
I was all very vague about it. They came up with the most lovely of hydrangea laden bouquets, dusted in colors of deep burgundys and greens.
Beauty. On my wedding day, she and Glynnis made my best day...better.
And all the while I got the feeling that Claudine and Glynnis were having maybe
more fun than I was because every time I would see them, they were laughing.
Enjoying every minute of being together and creating this beauty between them.
Like sisters are wont to do. And I understood this. Because I have sisters.
It seems Claudine spread joy and beauty to whomever she touched.
She savored life. She made the ordinary special.
a quick lunch at El Rosal could turn into a full afternoon of laughter and companionship.
It was the essence of who she was, even at the end of her fight with cancer.
And then there was the service for Ralph.
One of Scott's and his best friend, Ben's, youth kids.
And when Scott and I got married, he became my youth kid, too.
We still call them youth kids. Even though these kids are nearing 30.
Ralph led with funny. You could count on whatever came out of his mouth being funny.
And he followed up the funny with love.
Because you could count on a hug right after the funny. At least I could.
Scott and Ralph would just clown each other relentlessly until someone would give.
Or until so many lines had been crossed that they had to stop,
lest they lose their salvation.
This continued even after Ralph had to have his leg amputated due to cancer.
I saw him in the church parking lot. He was sitting in the car.
His leg was still bandaged. I told him we were praying for him.
And asked, "Is there anything we can do for you?"
He thought for a moment and said,
"Maybe if Scott could put on some sparkly shorts and dance for me that would help."
I told him I would pass the message along.
He went on to tattoo a milk carton with a picture of a footprint on it on his other calf, just in case someone had seen his missing foot.
He put others at ease with his humor even when we didn't know how to address the painful journey he was going through.
There will never be another Ralph. There will never be another Claudine.
There has been a lot of crying going on. A lot of missing them.
There is no getting past that.
And I am not sure how to process that. Even with words.
Words can not encompass the spirit. The spirit of one shaped in the image of God.
But I will be praying for Claudine's family. And I will be praying for Ralph's family.
The ones they loved so well. The ones they loved best. The ones who will miss them the most.
And I will be remembering them.
With a deep sense of gratitude, for having known them,
for having experienced a bit of life with them,
and for them having left their mark upon my soul.
